Common Dental Emergencies
A dental emergency may appear in the form of persistent bleeding, discomfort that doesn’t improve with medication, or damage from serious injuries to the face—but there are other signs of emergencies to be aware of.
Some of the common dental emergencies include:
- Something stuck in your teeth
- Toothaches
- Chipped or broken teeth
- Knocked out teeth
- Lost fillings
- A badly bitten tongue or lip
- Oral infections
- Swollen face or jaw
What to Do While Waiting for Emergency Dental Care
Depending on the dental emergency, there may be strategies you can follow to support your dental health and work towards a positive outcome while you wait to see your dentist.
Here are some tips for common dental emergencies:
Toothaches: Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to your cheek if your mouth is swollen.
Broken teeth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and carefully save the piece of your tooth that broke off. Apply gauze to any bleeding area and use a cold compress to reduce swelling.
Knocked-out teeth: Rinse any knocked-out tooth with water and avoid touching the bottom of the tooth. You can carefully try to place it back in its socket while you wait for dental care—you may need to hold it in place. If that is not possible, you can also place the tooth in milk to help it stay moist and protected.
How to Prevent a Dental Emergency
Preventing dental injuries is just as important as brushing and flossing every day.
Many common dental emergencies can be avoided with a few simple actions. Here are a few tips to follow:
- Avoid chewing hard objects
- Avoid using your teeth to cut tape or threads
- Wear a mouthguard during sports activities to minimize the risk of oral injuries
- Brush and floss regularly
- Schedule regular dental exams and cleanings
When you visit us, we can provide personalized advice for avoiding dental emergencies.
