What Is a Root Canal?

Root canal therapy treats infections in the innermost layer of your teeth, also known as the tooth pulp. These infections happen when bacteria in your mouth invades the tooth pulp and causes inflammation.

During root canal therapy, the inflamed pulp is removed and the inside of your tooth will be disinfected before a filling and a crown is used to seal your tooth and help prevent reinfection.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

During a dental exam, we will take a close look at the inside of your mouth to identify anything that may be If you have the following symptoms, you may have an infected tooth and could need root canal therapy:

  • Persistent tooth pain that spreads to the jaw, face, or other teeth
  • Pain when you chew or touch your teeth
  • Swollen or tender gums and jaw
  • Pimples on your gums
  • A discoloured tooth

What Happens During Root Canal Therapy?

Before treatment, your dentist will take an X-ray of the impacted tooth and perform other tests to determine the extent of the infection.

Anesthesia will be given to numb your infected tooth and surrounding areas. If you feel anxious, your dentist may also provide sedation to help you relax. Once this is done, a hole will be drilled into the tooth’s crown to access the pulp and clear it out. Once the pulp has been cleaned and disinfected, a filling will be added to the empty cavity and a crown will be used to seal the tooth.

What to Expect After Treatment

You should be able to return to your normal daily activities shortly after your appointment.  It typically takes an hour for the anesthesia to wear off and around 1 week for your tooth and gums to recover from the procedure.

For the first few days after receiving root canal therapy, we suggest only eating soft foods. Avoid chewing with the treated tooth and avoid smoking. We also recommend practicing good oral hygiene to maintain the results of your treatment.
